Moths (and dragonflies) aren’t drawn to flames at all. They take evasive action.

But in the insect universe (long experienced pre-mankind), light always descends from above. They rely on that rule to guess which way is up. Light disobeying the rule defeats their tactics, thwarting their escape. Eventually they end up in the fire.
