Why planes vanish: the search for MH370. This BBC film is part gripping detective story and part science documentary. This is because whoever was in control of the airliner when it departed from its flight plan had expert knowledge of international air travel and made determined efforts to ensure the plane would never be found. But equally determined investigators have in fact recovered a good deal of its wreckage: washed up on beaches around the Pacific rim.

But it also highlights two concerning issues with air travel:

  • QUOTE: “It should be easier for a pilot to say: I’m not ok.” But a pilot admitting this ends his career.
  • Plane tickets are getting cheaper, but the airline’s overheads are not. The only place to make savings is to make the crew work harder.
