Researchers at Linköping University in Sweden have synthesised sheets of gold only 1 atom thick. They’ve named the new material goldene, by analogy with the notorious graphene, which consists of sheets of graphite (carbon) only 1 atom thick.

Both novel materials hold out promise of major advances in electronic devices. But goldene might also help an ailing economy eke out its gold reserves?
