Why do some sea creatures glow? How long have they been doing it?

Some three-quarters of all undersea animals can generate their own light, but the origin of this ability has been shrouded in mystery. New research on octocorals suggests bioluminescence started long before anyone imagined: about 540 million years ago, and has evolved independently some 94 times across the tree of life.
