Leprosy was a dreaded disease in the Middle Ages, and those affected were the victims of public prejudice. Numerous leprosaria (leper hospitals, asylums or colonies), were founded throughout Europe in the Middle Ages, some being run on monastic lines.

Scientists have recently discovered a link between leprosy in mediaeval England and the habit of keeping red squirrels as pets. The animals may have been an important vector for the disease.
