The German cockroach is the pet nobody asked for but almost everyone has. The world’s most abundant roach, it lives only among humans—and we ourselves may be to blame for its spread. A genetic study published today in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences finds that medieval warfare and colonial trade helped the roach reach nearly every corner of the globe.
