Researchers at the University of Greenwich, UK, have managed to grow potatoes, tomatoes, dwarf beans, carrots, lettuce, spring onions, chives and basil under simulated Martian conditions, in a hydroponic / aquaculture set-up which also breeds fish (tilapia).
They do have this thought-provoking point to make:
While this project offers a solution for food production away from Earth, we should remember that Earth is a paradise and there is no comparison in terms of its abundance and variety of life-forms. Putting mankind on Mars is a way to ensure the survival of humans in case of disaster on Earth.
But, we need to first and foremost protect our landscapes, habitats and biodiversity, and ensure every person on this planet is cared for.
