The Banff Wildlife Crossings. All Hail to this Canadian solution to a global issue.

Wild animals commute, sometimes daily. They do it for the same reasons we do: to reach food, water, or a mate. When we build a long-distance highway, we cut through natural paths, putting the animals that use them at grave risk of becoming roadkill. Not to say motorists: hitting a deer will crash your car.

Some road schemes have tried underpasses. But most animals (including me) are apt to see using an underpass as deliberately walking into a trap. The answer is a bridge – one that looks non-threatening. It pays to think like the animal you want to protect.
