This is the Merchant Ball, in Marion, Ohio. A massive polished stone sphere gracing the monument to Mr Charles Merchant.

But the ball is unquiet. Every now and again it needs to be repositioned, to rest once more on the unpolished spot on which it is meant to rest on its plinth.

The ball weighs an estimated 5,200 pounds. How does it manage to rotate?
