From that outstanding source of wacky information Atlas Obscura, I read about the Anchoress of Shere.

Walled up for life in fulfilment of her vow of stability, Christine Carpenter got so tired of being stuck indoors that in 1332 she broke out of her cell in St James’ Church in Shere, near Guildford. But later the same year, facing excommunication, she was petitioning the Pope to have herself walled up again. And there she stayed until her death.

No matter how bad things were in the world at large, they were destined to get a whole lot worse.
