Saul Justin Newman is one of this year’s prizewinners at the 34th annual Ig Nobel Prize ceremony. Not to be confused with the actual Nobel prizes, the Ig Nobels recognise scientific discoveries that “make people laugh, then think.”

Looking for some link between longevity and domicile (think: Mediterranean Diet), Saul scratched his head at the strong correlation between extreme old age and extreme deprivation. Surely living in a run-down neighbourhood, where the Long Arm of the Law is either twisted or broken, can’t be conducive to a healthy lifestyle?

Eventually he rumbled what was happening. There was a Japanese government review in 2010, which found that 82% of the people aged over 100 in Japan turned out to be dead.

So… the secret to living to 110 is: don’t register your death.
