Pando (Latin: “I spread”) rakes in the superlatives. It may look like a forest but it consists entirely of suckers from an interconnected mass of roots, which makes it a single organism.

The largest tree, a quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides) located in the US state of Utah, it is the heaviest known organism, and now it appears it may also be the oldest organism, between 16,000 and 80,000 years old.

The picture shows the extent of the tree (outlined) in the landscape.
