From WIRED yesterday…

As part of an ongoing copyright lawsuit, The New York Times says it spent 150 hours sifting through OpenAI’s training data looking for potential evidence—only for OpenAI to delete all of its work.

Just imagine it. The cops give you a dossier and say “keep this safe – it contains all the evidence we need to put you in prison.” What are you going to do with it?

I suppose if you were really-really law-abiding, you’d take it home, lock it in your safe and deliver it up again intact when the court asks for it.

But there may be a catch… if you succumbed to temptation, mightn’t it be precisely what the cops are aiming at?

I ask myself: if the cops had covered up their blunder, how would WIRED have known about it?
