An invitation from The Bee Magazine, forwarded by our member Jill:

On the evening of March 25, Claire Malcolm, our publisher and CEO of New Writing North, will be hosting an online launch event for the remarkable memoir Chopsy: The Resistance Tales of a Working-Class Woman by Maya Jordan – and we’d love you to come.

Chopsy is a fierce and furious account of a working-class life that is attracting plaudits from readers including Michael Sheen and Daisy May Cooper. Recounting her struggles with the education system, chronic illness and systemic and individual prejudice, Maya gives a unique and timely insight into modern Britain. We know Bee followers, and anyone with an interest in contemporary social class, will recognise its stories, and be interested to hear how the book came to be written.

At the event Claire will interview Maya about the book, and about her determined struggle to become a published writer. Maya is a graduate of New Writing North’s A Writing Chance programme for working-class writers, and the conversation will feature her reflections on the challenges facing working-class writers – and some means of overcoming them.

This is bound to be a funny, fascinating and frank evening that will enable the Bee community to talk to Claire, Maya and each other, and we look forward to meeting you online.
