Minutes of the meeting at La Rosa Hotel on Thursday 8 March 2018.

Present: Jonathan, Roy, Jenny, Graham, Adele, Louise, Ian (chair).

Apologies: Pip, Mike, Rose.

Topic: Members’ work-in-progress.

Ian — reminded those present of the first performance at La Rosa Hotel, by Jenny’s duet Merry Melancholy, of Devereux, Earl of Essex on Thursday 22 March 2018 at 7.30 PM. This was the same day as the next meeting of the group.

Adele — read two poems, one dark, the other light-hearted: Threat of Abuse and Blackbird.

Jonathan — read an untitled monologue by an unrepentant wife-murderer.

Roy — read a new passage from his latest Wesson adventure. Wesson and Jane interview Mme Barnard in a French café about the death of a wartime SOE agent. It dawns on Wesson that the old lady is telling him about his own father, whom he never knew.

Louise — read a hilarious piece that may become part of a longer work: an account of her first few weeks as a trainee radiographer.

Jenny — read a new poem provisionally entitled Jabberwocky II, a pastiche of Lewis Carroll’s famous nonsense rhyme.

Graham — continued reading from his unpublished autobiography: The Sea, the 70s and the Spelling. A frank discussion followed about alcohol and drug abuse at sea. Members opined that this should be more critically handled in the book, but without suppressing any facts.

Ian [Anitra’s Petition] — En-route for the Moon, Commissioner Nilsson returns to Anitra her lost communication device: a disguised charm from her bracelet. She reveals that Anitra’s guardian Peter Zwillinge is in the luggage hold frozen down in a hibernator. He is bound for the Moon to stand trial for his crimes.
