Merry Melancholy – Jenny Hill (vocalist) and Simon Nisbett (lute) – are giving the first performance of A Rehearsal Of The Life And Death Of Robert Devereux (Thursday 22 March 2018, 7.30 PM, at La Rosa Hotel, admission £8).
Robert Devereux, 2nd Earl of Essex, was a favourite of Queen Elizabeth I of England and the darling of the nation. An ill-starred attempt to rescue the Queen from her twisted Secretary of State Robert Cecil by marching on London ended in Essex’s beheading for treason.
The Duo sing songs from the period, especially those of the English Renaissance composer, lutenist, and singer John Dowland, threaded together in the frame story of a dress rehearsal for a show commemorating the hero’s death. Although Merry Melancholy have appeared in public as a duo many times, this is the opening performance of this particular show.

It was a marvellous show! And the venue was good (La Rosa) with the bar open throughout.
