Minutes of the meeting at La Rosa Hotel on Thursday 20 September 2018.
Present: Adele, Jonathan, Jenny, Ian (chair).
Topic: Members’ work-in-progress.
Adele — continued with a reading of the play she has produced, and which she is now circulating among potential markets. Three characters had scripts prepared, which were handed out: Ray (Jonathan), Sybil (Ian), Sandra (Adele).
The meeting agreed that the repartee was engaging and the dialogue unforced.
Jenny — read a narrative poem provisionally entitled: She Is Leaving, which describes what happens when a woman who has accepted an unwanted rail ticket uses it to leave her partner.
Much discussion ensued about how authentic the situation was, and advice was offered on how to make an already competent and polished poem even better.
Jonathan — read three short poems written back in 2006:
- TANNOY (chosen as Poem of the Week)
- S & B & G & T, a mood piece about relaxing with a drink to the sound of swallows and blackbirds
- Untitled, asking why anyone should want a title to their name, even if it’s only “Mister”?
The last poem provoked a lively discussion about the disagreeable aspects of Miss, Ms and Mrs.
Ian [Anitra’s Petition] — Anitra and Dolpou have been abducted from a Moonforce convoy deporting them to Mars by fast-ferry and forced to board the Oberon. While Dolpou visits the captain to complain about their treatment, Anitra decides to wander off and do some exploring. She is staggered by the size and opulence of the ice-world.
The meeting finished at 1:50 PM.
